IPL Luvo Lucent™
IPL Photofacial (Luvo Lucent™) in Vancouver, BC
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses broad-spectrum light to address multiple skin concerns at once, including discoloration and visible redness. The Luvo Lucent™ IPL allows for precise, controlled treatments that are safe and effective for a wide range of skin types.
Concerns
Redness
Skin Texture
Hyperpigmentation
Treatment Time
30–45 minutes
Downtime
None to minimal; mild redness for a few hours.
How It Works
The light energy is absorbed by pigment and vascular targets beneath the skin’s surface. This energy breaks down discoloration and redness, which the body naturally clears over time, while also stimulating collagen for smoother, healthier-looking skin.
Consultation & Planning
Most patients benefit from a series of 3–5 IPL treatments, spaced approximately 4 weeks apart, depending on pigmentation, redness, and desired results.

What should I avoid before my treatment?
Leading up to your treatment, do not use Accutane for at least 6 months, avoid the sun 4 weeks prior, avoid tanning creams 2 weeks prior, and avoid products containing salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, retinol, prescription retinoids, or benzoyl peroxide for 7 days prior. SPF every day for a minimum of 4 weeks prior is recommended.
What skin concerns does IPL treat best?
IPL is ideal for superficial sun damage, freckles, age spots, broken capillaries, and diffuse redness. It’s especially effective for patients with cumulative sun exposure rather than deep pigmentation or scarring.
How does IPL differ from Pico laser for pigmentation?
IPL works well for widespread, surface-level pigment and redness. Pico laser is more precise and better for deeper, stubborn pigmentation and mixed pigment types. Many patients benefit from IPL first, followed by Pico if needed.
Who is a good candidate for IPL?
IPL works best for lighter skin tones with sun damage, redness, or freckles. Ideal candidates are not tanned and can commit to sun avoidance and proper aftercare.
Why do pigmented spots get darker after IPL before fading?
Actually, this is a sign it's working. When IPL energy targets pigmented cells, the melanin rises to the surface before it flakes away. Think of it as the skin pushing out what doesn't belong. Darkening in the days following treatment is completely normal and typically resolves within 5–10 days.
Who is NOT a good candidate for IPL?
Patients with darker skin tones, recent tanning, active melasma, or a history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may be better suited for alternative laser treatments. A consultation is essential to avoid unwanted pigment changes.
