01. The First Step

Alarplasty refines the width of the nostrils, the alar base, for patients whose nostrils appear wide or flared relative to the rest of the nose and face. It can be performed on its own as a targeted refinement or as part of a broader rhinoplasty plan.

Nostril shape varies enormously between individuals and ethnic backgrounds, and preserving your identity is central to Dr. Denton's approach. In consultation, he assesses your nasal base in proportion to your nose, lips, and overall facial structure, and explains precisely how much narrowing would create balance without ever looking operated on.

02. Procedure at a Glance

Alarplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, you will arrive, have your procedure, and return home the same day. The process from arrival to departure typically takes two to three hours in total, including preparation and post-procedure.

Before the procedure begins, the area is carefully marked and the local anaesthetic is administered. Once you are fully numb and comfortable, Dr. Denton works with precision to remove a carefully calculated amount of tissue from each side, guided by the measurements taken during your consultation. Both sides are assessed together throughout the process to ensure symmetry.

You will be awake and comfortable throughout. Most patients describe the experience as calm once the anaesthetic has taken effect. The procedure itself typically takes 60–90 minutes, after which fine sutures are placed and you are observed briefly before being discharged.

03. The Recovery

Recovery from alarplasty is straightforward and manageable. The most notable restriction is the 7-day suture period, during which gentle care of the area is important. Most patients are surprised by how quickly they feel like themselves again.

Mild swelling and tenderness around the base of the nose is expected in the first few days and resolves steadily. Bruising, if present, is typically minimal and contained to the immediate treatment area.
